...first I check HitTail and look at the suggestions and what I need help in ranking for. Then I determine what keywords I need to focus on and figure out what I can write about that will interest people, while at the same time help me to get searched or improve rankings.

This is a great tool for marketing bloggers who want to generate traffic and create buzz around their blog. In a personal blog, however, I think it matters more than the author be passionate about the topic, than simply having the right keywords in place. Still, this is cool.
Perhaps the best HitTail market, and the most difficult to reach is small business. As a brief owner of a small business myself, and a friend of many others, I completely understand the NEED for HitTail—and the IMPOSSIBILITY of them ever discovering it on thier own. This online Web 2.0 digirati crowd that knows about such things is about as far removed from the small business crowd as bonobos are from chimps. Sure, they look the same. But the way they live their lives is totally different, and they are unlikely to think the same information is important. If anyone out there knows the best way to reach small business, I'b be happy to know. Cause when we do reach them, it's nothing but love, as footscapes on Small Business Brief shows us:
