I have the HitTail Habit. I checked my logs today for new suggestions, and had a quick look at my hits log because it gives me a boost. Though HitTail is really about search engine referrals, the ’snake’ shows all referrals, and there they were.
HitTail is now being identified as one of the main ways to discover who is linking to your site, right along with Technorati.

We could check the server logs, but if you don't have access to them, there's an easier way.....sign on and use HitTail.com. It's an awesome free service and although most people use it primarily for keyword suggestions, the tool gives you every referral URL in full detail. Since it also does this for searches, you can click on the links that HitTail.com gives you to exactly reproduce the searches that people use (including ones from localized versions of Google).

The most significant reason to have analytics running on your blog, such as Google Analytics or HitTail, is the sheer entertainment of knowing how people actually get to your site. Many paths are expected.
We love our users, and go out of our way to help them. It's a good thing, since HitTail withdrawal can apparently be pretty serious.

As I've said previously, I've finally resolved what was wrong with my HitTail account. Thank goodness, because I found it a good source of material for more posts, and have felt a bit bereft when I couldn't access it.
Michele, who talks tech and business, doesn't much like our graphics, and yeah--we'll fix that when we meet an artist whose work we love (any takers?). But she does hit the nail on the head when she describes the addictive nature (and value) of HitTail.

I admit it, I'm addicted to hittail. If you're not using it yet, you should be. The quick sign up will only take you 2 minutes and after adding the code to your pages, you have real-time referral statistics and some nice SEO tools to help you make more money.
The real benefit of this tool is using to when trying out new things. For example, when I subit pages to reddit.com i can see immediately the volume of clicks a certain page is getting and on the flip side I'll know right away that certain topics equal certain death.
Also what i like is sometimes you notice traffic spikes but have no idea where its coming from, you can wait for analytics to give you the info or just check hittail and see the info in real time.
