This technically isn't a HitTail quote, so much as it is a wonderful anecdote about Search Engine Strategies in NYC last week. I was working the Hilton bar after the Evening Forum with Danny Sullivan on Thursday (the third question was me). The Motley Fool was comping drinks (thanks!). And I would walk up to just about everyone and introduce myself. As the night wore on, the composition of SES participants to plain old tourists shifted, such that I was saying hello to tourists who had no idea about SES or HitTail.
Here's the punch line:
Not a single person was upset or asked me to leave. Of the three tourist parties I intruded upon, every single one of them insisted on hearing about HitTail, and took my business card in order to pass it onto someone they knew.
One group was a from the financial investment community.
One group had a very hot chick.
The lesson learned? You don't need a conference to promote. And when you're genuinely friendly, and what you're promoting is of universal interest, helps improve peoples' lives, and free, people genuinely like to hear about it.
Especially with a few drinks in them.
